Hello everyone.

I'm joining curves on Tuesday.
Went along on Friday to understand their concept - gym equipment in a circle and you have a certain amount of time on each one then a voice cuts through the music (I think every 3 minutes) saying move on.
Their ethos is no men and no mirrors - I didn't want to join because of that reason it was the equipment that I could use because of ra and no pressure put on me with the fit gym bunnies in a normal gym.

I feel that I would fit in better because I'm slow and post op - there is a measurement and weigh at the begining but no hard sell if you understand my thought process.

Now I feel that I am ready to move on and stop thinking pre ra when I went to step class, body conditioning etc. Now it is about adapting to my needs.

Now I'm taking part in group physio and have a lovely lady in charge of us and guiding us to exercise our new knees it has made me relise I shouldn't wrap myself in cotton wool and take some risks!!LOL

I joined the forum last year and it has made me come out of my shell and accept raThumpUp

Let's hope I don't fall off the gym equipment and need more surgeryScared

Maybe take a hip flask to the gym!

I haven't gone to the gym for 2-3 years....I got new knee and a new chapter for me.
Enbrel next Monday starting - all this has given me a kick up the bum to go and live an active life & loose weight!

Let's hope I don't get a wedgie in the gym!

At the current tonnage I would whistle with a gym thong on!
My friend here lost all her baby weight using curves

They are good

I tried toning tables years ago
It helped me keep going

BigGrin I've joined curves!

It was £26.00 - one week less payment because of the time in their calendar - should be £34.00 per month plus joining fee of £36.00 one off payment.

Got weighed, blood pressure, height.....and away I went with two laps around the equipment with instructor with me at all times going though the equipment.

Commitment is go 3 times a week (twice around the circuit).
If you are going away then they give you a holiday chitty to use at another curves.

A mix of people from 20 somethings to the more mature lady.

I hope to inspire other people.

Second session at curves today, another tomorrow - just twice round the equipment (30 mins) then home yeppppiieeeeee!

ThumpUp another curves session done yesterday, I so want to be fit and loose some weight... I'm chuffed that I made an effort on my birthday!

Ra is alive making me stiffer that a ruler! I have swellings here there and everywhere with grim pockekts of fluid on my knuckles and hands but at the same time so happy and proud to have a new knee.

I have pressure to return to work and have had my pay cut - will do thread on " WORK" soon subject to finger stiffness.

I'm 9 weeks post knee replacement.

Hi Jane
It sounds like your new knee is going great guns and well done for motivating yourself with joining curves.I think it would take me 30 minutes just to get on the equipment!!!

Exercise is so important for R.A. I have just completed the expert patient programme which has really motivated me to keep an exercise log. I have also learn't that regular gentle exercise increases your tolerance to pain. I have alot of joint damage and I am not very mobile so exercising in water is the best option for me as well as resistance exercises, sat in a chair. I am aiming to build up to 30 minutes a day, but breaking it down into 10 minute segments will be more manageable.

Best of luck with your curves and hope you feel better for it in the long term.

Hi Jane - I've not been on the forum for a few weeks and am just catching up. Brilliant news that the knee is holding up so well! And a BIG WELL DONE to you for getting back into regular exercise. I've never heard of curves, but it does sound very good - you're inspiring me to get back into trim. I've been going a bit pear-shaped recently (literally) and have put on nearly a stone since Xmas and not doing any regular exercise, so you're motivating me to get a grip and get back to really looking after myself again

He Jenni - I've just read this Technology for assistance dogs and I remember you were planning to get a canine partner - how is that going?

I'm in so much ra pain that I want to look beyond the now!
Fluid on knuckles, hands, fingers (worst ever been).

But I'm in the zone to push!! Lol green godess (not).

Haven't got bend in knee yet, my 30 mins doing twice circuit is amazing for me!

Haven't get strength to climb in pool - this may help.

Will do work thread next week - being pushed back to work :(

Your pain could be linked to "curves". Please don't over do it.
You are really "post op" still. I understand your need to get

First monthly weigh in/measurement at curves.
Bad news I've gained weightSad, good news I've lost 4 1/2 inches from my body.Smile
I was cheesed off at the lack of weight loss....I went back late pm and did a second session (after going to caffe Nero for a chocolate cake with the family to cheer myself up) Tongue LOL

I'm doing this thread to inspire people and say I'm in a good mobility/place to do something I previously haven't been well enough to do ThumpUp and please newbie to ra don't feel that flare ups is the end.......we are all taking different adventures on the same path!

Second month weigh in today.
I've put 6lb on in the 2 months, was told to cut detail out and have just one boiled egg by curves staff which happens to be a co-franchise owner.

I've been up front with ra.....need your advice on here:

I'm glad my ra allows me to be mobile and even more so with knee getting better ad anti tnf's. I explained to curves that I'm feeling better coming to the gym.

How should I play this? My intention has been my way of improving mobility.

Yes, I felt cheesed off earlier.

What you need to remember here is that the exercise builds up muscle. Muscle weighs a great deal more than fat, so if you exercise without watching what you eat, you will initially gain weight. Ideally, follow a good safe eating plan, such as Slimming World, alongside your exercise and the weight should melt away. Steve and I are currently on SW and have both lost a stone in the first month without noticing we are dieting. Steve exercises regularly at the gym and is really feeling the benefit of the combined work. Sadly, at the moment I am not even allowed physio. My right leg has just been virtually rebuilt and my amazing surgeon is very very strict about what I can and can't do. Hopefully, he will let me swim soon, as the gym pool has a hoist. We'll see. Let us know how it goes and do take care.

my physio advice has always been about maintaining range of movement and not pushing it. "no pain no gain" is not for us RAers. if you hurt you must stop

the hydrotherapy helped me most in recent times.

when I was first ill, i used these "toning tables" as they were less impacting on the joints but even then I struggled.
plus, they cost a massive amount in subs.

my mum lost all her weight on that slimming world and she did her exercise mainly on the wii.
she has a bit of osteo here and there so nothing you have and not as serious

just dont push yourself into a flair.

I was wondering if you could get some professional advice on this Jane, and seek a physios opinion and develop a programme from there?
they even found something I could do that brought my heart rate up and thats impressive
